Questions
FAQ:
1. Do I need any prior experience to start?
No experience is required. Most of our students started with zero background. Classes are structured to welcome complete beginners and we always partner total beginners with someone more experienced who can help them learn at a pace that is sustainable.
2. Am I “in shape enough” to train?
Yes. You don’t need to be fit before you start. Waiting to start training until you're in shape is like waiting to start school until you're smart enough. Training is how you get in shape, and you’ll improve at your own pace.
3. What should I wear to my first class?
Comfortable compression style athletic clothing, and shorts or athletic leggings is fine for your first session. If you decide to continue, we’ll guide you on proper gear. We also keep some stock of gear for students.
4. Is training safe? Safety is a top priority.
Classes are supervised, techniques are taught safely, and partners are expected to train with control and respect. We take your comfort and safety very seriously.
5. Will I be sparring right away?
No. Beginners focus on fundamentals, movement, and technique. Sparring is optional and introduced gradually when you’re ready. Some students never spar, and that's totally fine too!
6. Am I too old to start?
Absolutely not. We have students of all ages. Progress is based on consistency, technical application, commitment, and tenacity not age. We have had students train with us well into their 70s+.
7. What if I’m nervous or feel out of place?
That’s completely normal. Everyone felt that way on their first day. Our community is supportive, and no one expects perfection. We always have experienced coaches and students on hand who have the skill and knowledge to help you feel welcome and part of the team. We put our growing community first.
8. How often should I train?
Most beginners start with 2–3 classes per week. You can adjust your schedule based on your goals and recovery. We also offer a beginner only membership for those who want to get their feet wet with martial arts.
9. Do I have to compete?
Not at all. Competition is optional. Many students train for fitness, confidence, self-defense, and personal growth. Only 20% of jiu jitsu students on average ever step foot into the competition scene.
10. What makes your school different?
We focus on growth, respect, and community. You’ll find a welcoming environment where progress matters more than ego.
11. Are you a political gym or do you exclude anyone from your programs?
We believe strongly that everyone deserves access to safe, reliable martial arts. We have students that have trained with us from all backgrounds, all races, all genders and political affiliations. We truly include everyone, and believe strongly that all students seeking to better themselves should be welcome at our academy. We simply ask that students focus on training, and leave their politics at the door. As a minority/immigrant owned business, we also believe that the most marginalized groups deserve safe access to martial arts and self defense.
The only students we remove are those who would use martial arts to harm others, make others feel unsafe, are predatory, or put their own ego ahead of others.
